Dr. Lawrence B. Cohen, MD, MSc, FRCP(C)

Biography

Dr. Lawrence Cohen is a highly respected Gastroenterologist with over three decades of clinical, academic, and research experience. He joined Cleveland Clinic Canada in 2006 and has served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto since 2000. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Dr. Cohen has also been a longstanding consultant in gastroenterology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he has held both medical and administrative leadership roles since 1985.

Born and raised in Toronto, Dr. Cohen began his academic journey at the University of Toronto, where he earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Pharmacology. He went on to complete his Doctor of Medicine at McMaster University in 1979, followed by an internship at St. Michael’s Hospital and residency training at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in Toronto and Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His advanced subspecialty training in Gastroenterology and Therapeutic Endoscopy was completed at the University of Toronto and Wellesley Hospital in 1985.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cohen has been an active contributor to gastroenterology communities in both Canada and the United States. He has published extensively, including 22 peer-reviewed articles, 39 abstracts, and presentations to over 26 professional societies. Known for his academic contributions and excellence in clinical teaching, he has earned multiple awards recognizing his impact in research, medical education, and patient care.

Outside of his medical career, Dr. Cohen is a devoted family man who enjoys life to the fullest alongside his five sons and loving wife.
