What is a No Drain Tummy Tuck or Drain Free Tummy Tuck?

The no-drain tummy tuck surgery helps patients improve their abdominal area with reduced downtime and less discomfort. However with Drain, We take the drains out when they stop making large amounts of fluid. Typically, it takes 7-10 days for this to happen, and the drainage to decrease to 25-30 cc each per 24 hour time period. People who have lipo at the same time tend to make more fluid for longer.

Traditional tummy tuck surgery techniques require creating an open space between the skin and muscle in the abdominal area. The open space then encouraged the accumulation of fluid, causing a seroma that slows down the healing process. In order to prevent fluid build-up and swelling, surgeons inserted small tubes or drains that would discharge excess fluid. Although it was an effective method for an abdominoplasty surgery, living with a drain for an elongated period of time (up to two weeks) can be a nuisance and an inconvenience for our patients, which is something you want to avoid at all costs.

In order to ease your comfort and quicken your healing, our no-drain tummy tuck surgery lets you see great results with minimal hassle and faster recovery. This method allows patients to return to their normal everyday routine much faster than traditional tummy tuck methods.

This innovative technique seals the open space between the skin and muscle. This helps prevent fluids from accumulating in the area and becoming a seroma. A special internal stitch, the Quill suture, ensures that the skin and muscle are set in place with barbs.

Advantages of using the Quill suture:

  • Patients who undergo our no-drain tummy tuck surgery heal quicker with ease, relief, and comfort.
  • Patients who undergo this technique have a lower risk of infection and less visible scarring.
  • The new no-drain tummy tuck surgery lets you see great results with minimal hassle and faster recovery.
  • This method allows patients to return to their normal everyday routine much faster than traditional tummy tuck methods.

Are You a Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

You are the best candidate for a tummy tuck if you are a man or woman in relatively good shape but find yourself bothered by the fat deposit or loose abdominal skin on your body. You may have attempted to lose the extra fat and skin with a consistent diet and exercise plan but you had difficulty with the process. If this is the case, you should strongly consider a tummy tuck.

Reasons to Consider Abdominoplasty:

  • Women who have over-stretched their abdominal muscles and skin due to multiple pregnancies
  • Correct a protruding stomach that is inconsistent and disproportionate to the rest of the body
  • Improve the tone of the abdominal and stomach muscles
  • Correct noticeable C-section scars and stretch marks
  • Eliminate problems in the skin fold under the abdomen
  • Repair outstretched abdominal muscles

You can also consider abdominoplasty surgery if you have had a significant loss of weight, you have reached your ideal weight, and your efforts have left behind loose skin that cannot be corrected with diet or exercise. With any loss or gain of weight, there is the possibility of decreased skin elasticity. A tummy tuck may drastically improve your situation.

Although abdominoplasty surgery may improve your appearance and boost your self-confidence, it may not necessarily transform your figure to your ideal look. In the process of making your decision to have the procedure, you should consider the practicality of your expectations and discuss them with an experienced surgeon, so that you can make the right decision. We want to keep you grounded and realistic throughout the process, so you can truly enjoy the results at the end.

What Happens During a Consultation?

We want to ensure that you are well informed in order to make the right decision when it comes to choosing a cosmetic surgery procedure that meets your goals and expectations. We are here to help ease your worries and relieve your anxiety.

Our doctors take the time to understand your goals and expectations for a tummy tuck. During your initial consultation, you can expect that our doctors will:

  • Evaluate your medical history and medications
  • Discuss your goals and expectations
  • Provide recommendations based on your history and goals

If your general health check reveals that you are qualified to be a patient, we can then discuss the details regarding your tummy tuck, including what to expect and how you can prepare for the surgery. By the end of our meeting, we hope that you will have all of the information you need in order to make a knowledgeable decision.
Should you have any questions during our meeting, we are more than willing to answer them to the best of our abilities. We want to ensure that you are comfortable and at ease before you make any major decisions and undergo this surgery.
After the doctor has gone through the process and cleared you for surgery, they will discuss the best option for you, choosing from one of many types of abdominoplasty surgeries. We’re excited to go on this journey with you!

What Are There Different Types of Tummy Tuck Surgeries?

There are several types of abdominoplasty. The type of surgery you will undergo is based upon the amount of excess fat and loose skin you have, as well as the elasticity of your stomach muscles.

There are three options for abdominoplasty surgery:

  1. Tummy Tuck (Complete Abdominoplasty): Surgeons make incisions above the pubic hairline and around the belly button. The muscles running vertically on either side of the stomach’s front walls are then tightened. In order to improve the contour of the stomach, the muscle tightening and the skin removal procedures are significant steps in the process. Based on the amount of fat required for removal, liposuction may also be performed in addition to the tummy tuck.
  2. Mini Tummy Tuck (Partial Abdominoplasty): Surgeons may recommend a mini tummy tuck for patients requesting mild to moderate changes in stomach contour. Patients qualify for a mini tummy tuck if they have minimal excess skin and stronger abdominal walls. A mini tummy tuck addresses the excess fat and skin only above the pubic area.
  3. Circumferential Abdominoplasty: Patients with large amounts of excess skin and fat in the back and hip area, in addition to the abdomen, may choose to undergo circumferential abdominoplasty surgery. Through this technique, surgeons improve the body’s contour in three different dimensions.

How Long Does the Procedure Last?

You can expect your procedure to last anywhere between 1 to 3 hours. The time frame of your surgery depends on your body type and your chosen type of surgery. Throughout the entire process, you can expect to be taken care of by our experienced and caring surgeons and staff from beginning to end.

Once you and your surgeon have agreed on an option for surgery, make sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions on how to prepare for your tummy tuck. It is important to carefully follow instructions in order to have a successful procedure with results you love.

How Do I Prepare for My Tummy Tuck?

Just like any surgery, your tummy tuck requires diligent preparation and we will guide you through each stage. We are supportive throughout the entire process.

During your consultation with our board-certified surgeon, you will receive specific instructions on how to prepare for your tummy tuck surgery. These instructions may include guidelines on eating, drinking, lifestyle, vitamins, and medications.

  • If you are a smoker, plan to refrain from smoking 1-2 weeks before surgery and at least 2 weeks after your surgery.
  • Avoid overexposure to the sun before your surgery, especially the abdomen area.
  • Avoid stringent diets that will inhibit your ability to heal.
  • If you develop a cold or infection of any kind leading up to your surgery, inform your surgeon immediately. This may prompt them to postpone your surgery until you are fully better.
  • You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery, as well as to take care of you at home for a day or two. The beginning stages of the healing process may prohibit you from going about your day as normal.

Please note that a typical abdominoplasty surgery can last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of the work required. Partial abdominoplasty surgery, on the other hand, may take 1-2 hours.

If you are diligent in following the instructions and guidelines given to you prior to surgery, you will be thoroughly prepared and ready for the procedure. The instructions and guidelines given to you are for your safety and success. We want you to be in optimal health to get the best results possible from your surgery.

What Happens During My Tummy Tuck Procedure?

To start the procedure, you are given general anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, the surgeon will begin the procedure by making the first incisions. A traditional tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision between the area of the pubic hairline and the belly button. The length is determined by the amount of excess skin.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon and his team will begin to remove the excess skin. After removing the excess skin, the skin is pulled towards the rib cage, the muscles are tightened, and the belly button is re-positioned. If recommended by the surgeon, liposuction may also be performed at this point in the surgery as well. If you have discussed other forms of surgery with your doctor, this may also be the point in the surgery that other procedures will be performed.

After the excess fat and skin are removed, the skin that has been left behind on the upper abdomen is used to cover the open area. Adjustments are made to ensure that the skin is tightened, as well as the muscles. Your stomach will be noticeably flatter. The surgeon will then end the surgery by suturing and bandaging the incision. In order to minimize swelling while the abdomen heals, you may be required to wear an elastic bandage or compression garment.

Following the surgery, the surgeon and his staff will meticulously care for you in order to ensure a safe and healthy recovery. The team will monitor your recovery, addressing any concerns or questions you might have. We want to guarantee a quick and full recovery, so that you can be back on your feet and return your everyday routine with newfound confidence in how you look.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from the Surgery?

The recovery process is a slow and steady pace. Your body will appreciate your cooperation in taking it slow and allowing things to naturally progress. Rushing your recovery will not benefit you and it may even hurt you in the long run. So, we encourage all of our patients to be cautious and careful throughout their recovery.

After your surgery, your abdomen may be swollen for the first few days. You may feel some pain and discomfort, which will be eased by the medication that will be prescribed for you.

Your surgeon will give you instructions in terms of personal hygiene, such as how to shower and change your dressings. It may be difficult to walk and start upright immediately after the surgery, but you will be able to move about normally after the first couple of days.

You are required to show up for follow-up appointments that will allow the doctor to remove your stitches and check your progress. Surface stitches are required to be removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. In 2 to 3 weeks, the doctor will remove the deeper sutures. A support garment may then replace the dressing on your incision. In 3 to 6 weeks after surgery, you will begin to feel like your normal self again.

In order to maintain the results of your abdominoplasty surgery, it is highly recommended that you follow a balanced diet and consistent exercise plan. After you have completely healed, we hope you will be overjoyed with the results!

Will I Have Scars After a Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Due to the nature of the procedure, you should expect some scars. The length of a scar from a tummy tuck varies with each patient. The scar can typically span from hip to hip. Your existing fold determines the length of the scar. While looking in the mirror, if you can identify the fold in your skin, you will have a good idea of how long your scar may be.

Our surgeons strive to have the scar as low as possible, hiding below the material of your pants or bikini. Should you choose to do a fully tummy tuck, there will also be a scar in the area of the belly button. If you undergo a mini tummy tuck, you will not have to worry about a belly button scar. Your scars will take several months to fade and it will take a year to fully heal. Your scars may appear to be worse before they get better, so don’t worry if you notice it getting worse. Although your scars may never completely disappear, we make sure to create incisions that will not show under most clothing, including your bathing suit.

What is a Panniculectomy?

A panniculectomy is drastically different from a tummy tuck. It is an option for patients who have lost more than 100 lbs. Due to their incredible weight loss, the patient may find themselves encountering medical problems because of the excessive skin. This procedure may be performed alone or it may be performed with a tummy tuck. The purpose of a panniculectomy is to remove the excessive amount of skin attached the abdomen called the “pannus” or apron.

Any individual who loses a significant amount of weight usually finds loose folds of skin around the abdomen area. Despite losing the fat in the abdominal area, you may find that the skin has limited or no elasticity due to prolonged stretching. Neglecting to correct the issue, individuals with a “pannus” or apron will encounter a multitude of problems, which may include:

  • Compromised daily hygiene methods
  • Yeast infections or cysts
  • Lower back pain
  • Rashes

A panniculectomy is a viable option for patients who have lost a remarkable amount of weight and/or have overcome obesity. During your consultation, your surgeon will advise the best course of action to meet your goals and expectations.

You may be a candidate for a panniculectomy if you meet the following:

  • Excessive skin presenting health problems, such as rashes, ulcers, or any other skin disorder
  • A stable and consistent number in weight for a minimum of one year
  • A dedication and commitment to an ongoing diet and exercise plan
  • Approval from OHIP

People of all ages are having the butt lift procedure and the result? A more sensual body profile!

The procedure is relatively simple. At your consultation with one of our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, you will discuss the results that you would like to achieve and then the doctor will determine the final result by measuring your body fat in proportion to the area being “reconstructed”.

The process involves removing fat from selected areas of your body through liposuction to create “donor fat” that will later be purified, before strategically injected into your buttocks.

The area where liposuction was performed will also help curve and compliment the new shape of your body by removing excess fat, so the butt will stand out more.

The areas of choice to withdraw excess fat by liposuction will typically include the lower back, love handles, abdomen, and thighs.
